The Wrecker produced a stunning opening event to the series sailed in the Taw Torridge Estuary off Instow, hosted by North Devon Yacht Club. Sailed in F4 gusting 6 westerly wind and a longer course into the estuary the event challenged all and some big grins coming home.
The event had saw 38 competitors afloat with an event record 22 visitors. This was possibly boosted by the event being free to enter.
It was a Cat Day with the first 4 places being taken by local Dart 15 and Dart 18s. The monohulls were lead home by Benjamin Pasco crewed by father Sam in their Laser 2000 in an exhibition performance. Well sailed Benjamin. Closely following behind was the RS 500 Sailed by Ian Mairs and Blaze of Alan Harris Guerrero who could not be separated on the beat taking 6 place equal. The finish was compromised by all rescue resources being diverted to capsized boats however thanks to the competitors to help resolve the final results.
Alan Lead the strong Blaze fleet of 8 boats no doubt thinking of the Blaze Western Champs to be held at NDYC next summer.
Thanks to all visitors for making this such a great series opener and to the NDYC Race Team on the day. A special mension should be given to NDYC for the bold step of making this a free event challenging the trend of falling race participation and making travelling so much more affordable for all.
