About
SSW was founded in 2017 to support and develop local sailing within our region, and get more people get excited about our fantastic sport. The first SW winterseries was started in 2017/8 with 10 clubs holding events for the sailing SW winter pursuit trophy. We also ran intermittently the SW lakes trophy historically run with Starcross, Roadford and Wimbleball Lake and latterly including Sutton Bingham.
Generally the Lakes and inland waters have run events in the coldest part of the season with coastal events before Christmas or Spring.
Originally SSW was supported by TracAce Ltd that was developing sailing tracking technology but with technological developments and the rise of mobile phone tracking SSW became independent raising some funds from Sailing club entry fees. Today Sailing Southwest is an entirely not for profit organisation with minor funding through sponsors. SSW is free for all and with volunteers helping looks to continue to run the series of pursuits over the winter for years to come.
Our aim is to help promote affordable racing in the colder winter months around the region from Somerset and Dorset to Devon and Cornwall. We regularly attract upto 100 sailors attending at least 1 event and typically 20-30 per event although the Steamer is in another league as the biggest event in the region.
Events and results are published regularly over the winter through our Facebook pages that reaches almost 1000 people and has almost 900 followers. We also continue to offer a completely free service to sailing clubs throughout the Westcountry, promoting their events, activities and successes through our website, newsletter and social media pages.
If you have a news story from your club, or your club wishes to participate in the series please do get in touch.
Look out for our SSW Winter Series, which runs from October to March each season, providing opportunities for affordable winter sailing for everyone (even non-westcountry folk!) throughout the colder months.
